The 2023 Genesis Invitational Recap
The Genesis Invitational 2023 took place this past February. Tournament host Tiger Woods welcomed an elevated field to compete at the iconic Riviera Country Club during LA’s PGA TOUR event. Each year, proceeds from the Genesis golf tournament benefit the educational programs of TGR Foundation in Southern California. Founded by Tiger Woods in 1996, TGR Foundation’s mission is to empower students to pursue their passions through education.

This year, Jon Rahm won the Genesis golf tournament in Los Angeles. The win helped him reclaim his number-one world ranking, marking the fifth time in his career he’s held that distinction. Rahm faced fierce competition from Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, and host Tiger Woods made headlines by participating in the first PGA Tour event he played in over 800 days. While Tiger finished forty-fifth on the Genesis Invitational leaderboard, he made a huge impact with his TGR Foundation.
The History of the Genesis Invitational
Founded in 1926, the Genesis Invitational was created to raise funds for the greater Los Angeles Community. It has a long history of making a positive impact on the community, and in 2016, Tiger Woods became the host of the 90-plus year-old tournament. With Tiger Woods as host, his TGR Foundation has become the primary charitable beneficiary of The Genesis Invitational.
How the TGR Foundation Makes an Impact
The connection between Tiger Woods and The Genesis Invitational runs deep. Woods attended many tournaments as a kid with his father, watching the greats of that era play. Riviera Country Club was the site of Woods’ PGA TOUR debut in 1992 as a 16-year-old amateur. Four years later, Tiger turned pro and founded the TGR Foundation. The original inspiration for the foundation was based on the Woods family motto of share and care, with a dream to empower youth to reach their highest potential. Tiger’s vision for the foundation refocused following the events of September 11, concentrating on providing underserved youth with hands-on education programs along with holistic support, guidance and mentorship.
TGR Foundation offers a series of education programs including STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) college-access and career exploration programs for middle and high school students as well as professional learning for educators.
