Genesis G90 Receives IIHS Top Safety Pick+
Imagine this scenario – you’re sitting in the front passenger seat of the car, gazing out the window at the cars passing by. It’s rush hour but you’ve gotten pretty good at distracting yourself throughout the long drive home. All the sudden the car jolts! You feel the drivers arm cross over your chest to hold you back as the brakes screech, nearly slamming the car into the one in front of you. You and the driver look at each other, let out a big sigh of relief, and usually the driver will mutter an apology under his breath.
Maybe in that situation you were the driver, or the backseat passenger, or maybe you’re feeling bad right now because neither you nor someone you’ve driven with has made the action to save you from flying forward after an abrupt stop. If that’s you, no worries, technology is evolving so that we don’t have to worry about that type of thing.
Building a car used to be all about driver safety but now it’s headed into a direction of passenger safety. This starts in the hands of the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, or IIHS for short. The IIHS is a non-profit organization committed to setting vehicle standards that ensure safe driving. Their headquarters are in Virgina and the non-profit was founded in 1959.
As briefly mentioned above, a new focus has been put on front-passenger safety specifically. Forty-seven cars qualified for the Top Safety Pick Award and fifteen qualified for the Top Safety Pick Award+ (the latter being the higher tier of the two). Starting this year, the Top Safety Pick+ now includes a passenger overlap crash test. It has also increased the intensity for LED light requirements for nighttime driving.
This year’s top pick is the 2018 Genesis G90. That’s right – the luxury brand that everyone has been talking about has proven it has what it takes. Genesis included in a press release that the G90 2018 model has the following safety features:
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
- Driver Attention Alert
- Smart Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist
- Lane Keep Assist
- Lane Departure Warning
- Smart Cruise Control with Stop/Start
- Full LED headlights with Dynamic Bending Light
- High Beam Assist
- Multiview Camera
- Haptic Steering Wheel
- Front and Rear Parking Sensors
- Full-color heads up display
- Multi-view Camera
- Pre-Active Seatbelt
- 9 Standard Airbags
In addition to the technology above, the G90 has 3.3T Premium LED lights, CD/DVD player in the glovebox, and the 5.0 Ultimate includes rear seat entertainment system with dual 10.3-inch HD monitors. Returning from the previous model is the 5.0 L V8 and the 3.3 twin-turbo V6 engines, as well as Intelligent Driver Mode. That last feature allows the driver set the tempo for their drive from 4 separate modes – Eco, Smart, Sport, or Individual.
